Allergies & Asthma

What is an allergy?

An allergy is an over sensitivity of the body’s immune system to a particular factor. For many, it may be dairy products, fruits, bee stings, or pollen. Rash, sinus problems, headaches, or a runny nose are common reactions. In extreme cases, allergies can be life threatening. Swelling may be so profuse that throats may tighten to a point where breathing becomes difficult, even impossible.

What is asthma?

Asthma is similar to an allergic reaction, but can potentially be more severe. The body’s immune system overreacts to a known allergen such as dust, mold, or bee stings. To protect the body from invasion, the airways to your lungs become narrowed. The surrounding muscles go into spasm, mucus production increases, and fluid buildup blocks air from getting to the lungs. Signs and symptoms include wheezing, profuse sweating, and shortness of breath.

Is Chiropractic care effective for relieving my allergies and asthma?

Yes, although there is no known cure, allergies and asthma can be managed through chiropractic care, which relieves stress on the oversensitive immune system. Maintenance of proper spinal alignment is essential for a proper functioning immune system. Treatment often includes nutritional evaluations to identify and eliminate causative factors. A balanced diet, free from additives and refined foods, can reduce the frequency and severity of allergic reactions and asthmatic attacks.

Coping with Asthma

For those of you who have never had it, breathe through a straw while lying on your back with a 30 lb. weight on your chest. Not easy is it? Now add a good dose of fear and anxiety. Asthma is a condition of narrowing of the airways to your lungs.

About 10 million people in the United States have asthma. Men and women are equally affected. With pollen season just around the corner, many of these people are at risk. Pollen, as well as other environmental factors such as dust, food, and bee stings can trigger an asthmatic response. Asthma is often preventable if environmental and occupational agents known to induce asthma attacks can be identified and eliminated.

Many chiropractors are using nutritional evaluations in addition to regular chiropractic care to improve the patient’s lifestyle. A balanced diet with the removal of refined foods and additives can often aid the asthma sufferer in the upcoming season.
